Moving On

I've decided I'll no longer be doing DDP Yoga.

My back is well enough now that I could be doing the videos again, but I don't really want to.  I don't look forward to the strength training exercises - the pushups, squats, and other calesthenic-type activities.  I think I really just want to do yoga.  I don't dig all the spiritual stuff that often comes with typical yoga, but I can just tune that out, I suppose.

I do think DDP and the folks at Team DDPY are sincere and the videos offer a really solid workout.  I think it's kind of a male-centric workout, with all the strength training and the power moves...but of course this program started as YRG (Yoga for Regular Guys).  After giving it a good hearty try, I realize it's just not for me.

If anyone would like to follow my progress toward better health, not just with yoga, but with all things wellness-related, please feel free to visit my other blog, Against The Grain.

To those reading this, thank you for including me in your blogroll and just a little bit in your life.

Peace.

Day 54

Day 54.  Huh.

It doesn't feel like day 60 should be right around the corner.

I don't think I'll be updating pics for the 60 days...not much has changed so far.

On the plus side...juicing feels good!

I've been drinking about 64oz per day of freshly squeezed fruit/vegetable juice.  I still eat other food, so it's not a juice fast, but I'm eating only whole foods - nothing processed, no gluten, no dairy.

More later.

So Six Days Later...

I don't feel much better.

I'm putting the yoga on hold for now.  I'll keep checking in here but I really just want my back to heal.  I hope this is nothing more serious than a pulled muscle, because I have crappy health insurance.  Maybe I should get into my car and roll into a tree at slow speed or something - because I have good auto insurance!

I saw a good movie yesterday called The Spectacular Now.  It was a romance/drama about a high school senior who drinks too much and doesn't care much about the future.  Throughout the whole movie I found myself rooting for him and wishing he'd stop making bad choices.  I wanted him to see that he was worth it and had his whole life ahead of him.  Then toward the end I realized I was just like him - not with drinking particularly, but with my health in general.  I just need to get out of my own way.  If I continue on as I am, following this plan and that for a week here, 3 weeks there, I'm going to be a bitter old 70 year old who can't climb a flight of stairs and takes insulin.  I have to change the trajectory of my health.

I'm not going to do any kind of diet right now.  I saw some advice a little while ago that I thought was good...I think it was from Rob over at DDP Yoga vs. Rob.  If you can't make a big change in your diet or the idea of giving things up is too difficult, just start adding more healthy things in.  Don't worry about cutting things out right now.  So for today, that's what I'm going to do.  I have an awesome juicer and today I'm going to start adding in Mean Green juice from Joe Cross:

Prep Time: 5 minutes
Total Time: 10 minutes
Yield: 1-2
Serving Size: 16oz. (500 mls)

Ingredients
  • 1 cucumber
  • 4 celery stalks
  • 2 apples
  • 6-8 leaves kale (Australian tuscan cabbage)
  • 1/2 lemon
  • 1 tbsp ginger
Directions
  1. Wash all produce well
  2. Peel the lemon, optional
  3. Juice
  4. Pour over ice
  5. Enjoy!
In his documentary Fat, Sick, and Nearly Dead, Joe did a long juice fast, and this was his staple. I highly recommend that movie, by the way.  Very inspiring and well-done.

It's a place to start.  I'm not going to do a juice fast.  I'm pretty much tired of forcing things on myself.  I'm just going to start evening out my diet to include more healthy things.

Here's another thing I'm going to do:  Homemade frozen liver pills.

I have never liked the taste of liver, which is a shame because it's SO nutritionally dense.  The first step is to find good quality liver - maybe at whole foods or a farmer's market.  Liver from a grass-fed animal is ideal.  It's not expensive, and it makes a LOT of supplements unnecessary if your diet is otherwise uneven (like mine).

So that's the plan for now - adding, not subtracting.  Focusing on health rather than on weight.

Hugs to all who have taken the time to read this.

3 Days

A weak-ass attempt at RHC today.  I mean, my abs got a workout, but the pulled muscle in my back is really limiting my ability to stretch and fully extend anything.  I think I'm going to take 3 days off and let my back heal.  It just isn't getting better as long as I keep doing yoga, and I think I need to let it rest.  I'm still going to do 90 workouts in 90 days though - I'm just going to have to double up on 3 of the days to make up for it.
I mean, no one said they had to be consecutive days...

Back Pain

My lower back is still hurting a lot, so it's another RHC day.  I've got a heating pad on it now, and I'm hoping tomorrow will be better.

Hip Hip Hooray

Another day of Red Hot Core...I seem to have pulled a muscle in my lower back somehow - I don't think it was during yoga - probably lifting my kiddo or something, but the last thing I wanted to do was yoga.  Made myself though, and just took it easy on moves that challenged those muscles.

I did measure myself this morning, and my waist measurement is down 3 inches from when I started DDP Yoga.  All other measurements are the same.  I'm pretty happy with that - not much (or any?) weight loss, but I am seeing some results.  So three cheers for Red Hot Core!

Discouraged But Not Giving In

The weight loss end of this journey is just not shaping up for me.  I've done LOTS of things over the past two years to lose weight, and haven't had much success.  I can lose a few pounds every time, but gain it back, or else get so hungry that whatever plan I'm doing becomes unmanageable.  Here are a few of the things I've attempted over just the last few years:

High carb, low fat
High protein, low fat
High protein, low carb
High fat, low carb, moderate protein
Cardio/Low calorie
Paleo
Gluten free/dairy free

Yes, I feel better eating no gluten, and in general I feel better eating low carb.  These things are good to know.  But I want to lose weight too.

My current eating plan (high fat, low carb, moderate protein, tracking calories and maintaining a calorie deficit, on average) isn't working out.  I do find that I can go long periods of time without eating but I'm not losing weight.   So this plan is out.

I have a new plan I'm going to try based on the book The Plan.  I'll give details if the results look promising in the first couple of weeks.

As far as yoga, I feel like I'm getting stronger and my waist seems to be less in-the-way...I'll check measurements tomorrow.  Maybe I'm down in size a bit even though the scale isn't cooperating.  The streak continues.  Energy yesterday and RHC today.

Till tomorrow.
